Translating and Proofing are the non-image-editing parts of scanlation. They do not require image-editing software; you will need notepad or an equivalent though. Obviously we cannot teach you japanese here, but we will show you important things to not piss off readers or, maybe even worse, your editors.  This means:

Structuring scripts is essential, but often forgotten. Scanlation means team-based working; you will want to decrease the load on your editors, meaning you should have legible scripts. If your script for the picture on the right looks like this...

...it will be extremely hard for anyone not able to read japanese to understand the script. You should always point out which page, panel, and bubble the line is in; do breaks after each bubble:


This should be much easier to understand, the abbreviations should be clear too (pg = page, p = panel, o = offtext, b = bubble, / = text is located in a connected bubble).
There is some optional stuff like making clear what text is thought or screamed etc.:
The more you structure your scripts have, the better; but always keep a set style of structuring. If you change styles all the time, that makes it harder for the editors after you.
